The Alutiiq Museum is recruiting for Summer Interns and for the permanent position of Museum Generalist. All of these positions will work throughout the organization supporting projects—from collection care to public outreach and administration.

First Friday with Mariah Stapleton

The Alutiiq Museum is participating in February's First Friday Art Walk, organized by the Kodiak Arts Council. This month, meet Alutiiq artist Mariah Stapleton and learn about her weaving.


Join us on February 2, from 5:00–7:00 pm at the Alutiiq Museum Store in the Downtown Marketplace. This is a free, public event. All are welcome. For more information please contact Gallery Manager Samantha Heglin, 844-425-8844.

Alutiiq Language Textbook Available

Designed for high school and college students, this textbook will take you on an exciting journey into the unique sounds, grammar, and vocabulary of Alutiiq, the language of Kodiak’s Native community. Written by April Counceller and Dehrich Chya, the book has engaging lessons, numerous examples, and worksheets. Dive in to deepen your understanding.


Suitable for both experienced language learners and new students. Produced by the Sun'aq Tribe of Kodiak.  An ebook is available for download now.  Paper copies will be available from the Sun'aq Tribe in March.

Cultural Orientation

Join Dehrich Chya for an introduction to Alutiiq culture and history. This one hour presentation will be offered twice—in person on February 15 at Noon at the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitors' Center, and over Zoom on March 21 at Noon. Watch our social media for the Zoom meeting link. These are free events. Everyone is welcome. Supported by the EVOS Trustee Council through the CORaL Network.

     

Alutiiq Objects at the State Museum

This embroidered gut bag from Afognak Island is one of the Alutiiq treasures in the Alaska State Museum's collections. These pieces are now available to view online. Visit our Amutat database to browse collections from Juneau and Sitka recently photographed by our staff.  Supported by the Tangirnaq Native Village and the US Bureau of Indian Affairs.

     

Colorable T-Shirts

Packaged with laundry-safe fabric markers, these colorable cotton t-shirts feature artwork by Hanna Sholl and include the Alutiiq words for five salmon species.

The Alutiiq Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the heritage and living culture of the Alutiiq, an Alaska Native tribal people. Representatives of Kodiak Alutiiq organizations govern the museum with funding from charitable contributions, memberships, grants, contracts, and sales.
